Family Services of Southeast Texas wants to remind readers that in these hard economic times when people are struggling to clothe themselves and their children, there is an alternative to buying brand new items at high retail prices. Family Services of Southeast Texas, Inc. offers Christine’s Resale Shop in Woodville that sells an assortment of gently used clothing and household items at a reduced price. Christine’s helps Family Services’ mission of strengthening families in two ways: First, items donated can be given directly to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault who are in need.
“Women and children who come to our shelters often have nothing more than the clothes on their backs,” said Janet Walker, Family Services’ Executive Director. “The resale shop provides not only clothing items to these clients, but also donated hygiene, toiletry and nonperishable food items that are transported to the shelter for the clients’ use. Clients leaving the shelter also receive an allotment of items for their new homes,” Walker added.
Second, items not used for the women and children living in the shelters are sold and the proceeds help support Family Services’ programs, including the Women and Children’s Shelter in Jefferson County and the Piney Woods Safe House in Jasper County and the Counseling Center in Beaumont. Christine’s Resale Shop accepts men’s, women’s and children’s clothing and shoes that are in good condition (new or slightly used), small household appliances, household items, such as lamps, dishes, and home décor items that can be resold.
“Due to limited space, we can’t accept furniture,” said Linda Bradley, Christine’s Resale Shop manager. “But, if you have something nice that you would like to give directly to the shelter, please call and we can make arrangements.”
“Volunteers who wish to donate their time to help in the resale shop are also always needed,” Walker said.
At Christine’s Resale Shop, the whole week beginning the last Monday of the month is a $2 bag sale. “You can fill a bag with regularly priced clothing for just two dollars!” Bradley said. Christine’s Resale Shop — originally named Jeanie’s Boutique — was renamed after the late Christine Martin, a former Family Services employee and an advocate for survivors of domestic violence. Christine’s Resale Shop is located at 501 West Bluff in Woodville. The shop is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Donations are accepted during store hours only. Please do not leave donations outside, they often get ruined.
