Around 200 students from Howard University in Washington D.C visited Southeast Texas for an “Alternative Spring Break.”  They traveled on buses for about 28 hours and went straight to work when they got here.  For four days, these 200 students worked at several Beaumont and Port Arthur United Way agencies, including Family Services.

What’s even more amazing is that 500+ more students traveled to Houston, the Florida Keys, Belle Glade, Chicago, Flint, New Orleans, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Anguilla, Ghana, and St. Croix for their Alternative Spring Break.

At the Family Services transitional housing complex, they painted the fence, picnic table, and awning at the playground, they put fresh mulch around the kid’s play areas, they painted the interior

of two apartments, they did some power-washing, and they helped us clear the last of the old furniture and equipment damaged during Hurricane Harvey.

The giving spirit radiated from each group that visited.  Their individual stories of giving and gratitude were heartwarming.  We feel lucky to have been selected as a beneficiary of their project and are very glad that they were blessed with some warm Southeast Texas weather!
